A Charmosa Niagara on the Lake

Aproveite também para desfrutar dessas lindas praças e jardins enquanto visita  Niagara on the Lake.

De Niagara on the Lake

As encantadoras Niagara Falls

A Las Vegas Canadense: Clifton Hill

Jantar no Margarita Ville

O barco e Nigara Falls à noite

Vale a pena esperar!!!

Meeting the Niagara Falls

The moment has come that you have been waiting for, let’s start the tour that will take us to the Niagara Falls Meeting.

But before we get to the Falls, I want you to meet with me a very charming little town with a British influence that looks like a movie set and is about 19 miles from Niagara Falls. I’m talking about Niagara on the Lake, that’s the name, the term “On The Lake” was added in 1880 to the name “Niagara” to differentiate the city of Niagara Falls where the falls are. Also because it is bathed by Lake Ontario (our old known Lake Ontario from the Toronto post, remember? If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look there to know or remember: https://cadaviagemumabagagem.com/top-10- de-toronto/ ) and the Niagara River.

The charming Niagara on the Lake

Niagara on the Lake was once the capital of the English colony in Canada between 1792 and 1796, it was even destroyed by the Americans in the Anglo-American war, but it was rebuilt and currently its forte is tourism. Its Historic Center (Old Town) is beautiful and gives us a real trip to the past with its Victorian style architecture, the streets with beautiful flower beds, among other charms.

The architectural beauty of Niagara on the Lake

The city of Niagara on the Lake is also famous for the Shaw Festival, which is a very important Theater Festival in Canada and always features plays inspired by the work of the great playwright Bernard Shaw, in addition to other productions. To know more details about the festival just take a look at the website: https://www.shawfest.com/

Shaw Festival Studios and Theater

As I mentioned earlier, Niagara on the Lake has a very beautiful architecture and one of the places that most represents this Victorian style is the Prince of Wales Hotel, which is one of the most sophisticated hotels in the city and has hosted celebrities, such as Queen Elizabeth II. But if you can’t stay at the hotel, you can visit the spa or restaurant, which is also open to non-guests. To find out more about the hotel, check out the website: https://www.vintage-hotels.com/princeofwales/

Prince of Wales Hotel

Another very striking point of Niagara on the Lake is its gastronomy, the Old Town is full of restaurants, which always seek to offer a meal with regional ingredients and refinement. One of the restaurants that also draws attention for its architecture is the Shaw Café & Wine Bar (https://shawcafe.ca/) and the photo would certainly have to be of my sister (why is it?…).

Shaw Café & Wine Bar with my sister Ane

In the Old Town of Niagara on the Lake, there is also the Memorial Clock Tower, which was built in the middle of the city’s main avenue in honor of those who died in the First World War.

The Famous Niagara on the Lake Clock

You must be wondering, where is the “Lake” of Niagara on the Lake, right? Calm down, it’s time to show you this beautiful view of Lake Ontario. Right there in Old Town, you just have to take the street opposite the Prince of Wales Hotel and go straight that you will reach this wonderful lake and be able to contemplate this view !!!! And to have a more detailed view just take a look at this video that I posted on our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN9OiQvIO2I

The beauty colors of Niagara on the Lake

Another thing that is very traditional in Niagara on the Lake is the Cart Ride through the historic center and the main streets of the city. As I do not like this type of animal tour for tourist or work purposes, I chose not to do it, but I could not fail to mention it since it is characteristic of the region.

But another tour that is super traditional in the region of Niagara on the Lake is Visitation to Wineries, as the city is surrounded by wineries that allow visitors to visit and taste their wines.

And among these wines is the famous Icewine, which has a peculiarity that makes it very special: it is produced with frozen harvested grapes, that’s right, it has a right time for the harvest because they need to be on point and be removed from the foot while still frozen and a huge amount of grapes goes to make the wine (sometimes a whole vine for a single bottle, about 2kg of grape for 200ml of wine), so their bottles are smaller and their value much higher than traditional wines. Canada is the largest producer of Icewine in the world and more than 70% of this production takes place in Ontario, more specifically in the Niagara on the Lake region. Icewine is usually served chilled and goes well with desserts.

The Traditional Icewine

Now let’s go to Meeting the Niagara Falls!!!

The majestic Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a city that is located 80 miles from Toronto on the banks of the Niagara River, which rises on Lake Erie and flows into Lake Ontario. The Famous Niagara Falls are formed by three waterfalls: two falls on the American side (called American), the smaller one being known as Bridal Veil and the larger one is called Luna and has the large horseshoe-shaped drop, hence the name Horseshoe, which lies between the United States and Canada.

American Falls
Between American and Horseshoe
Niagara Falls and The Seagulls

Just looking at it is already a charm, but do you imagine coming up close and feeling the waters of Niagara Falls touching your face? It seems impossible, but it is true !!! It’s the boat ride: Hornblower Niagara Cruises! The excitement begins with the funicular descent to reach the boat…

The Funicular for the Falls

From the boat we have the view of the Rainbow Bridge that is on the border between Canada and the United States, so much so that it is possible to descend to the Falls both on one side and on the other so that the two countries enjoy this gift of nature. The bridge was built between 1940 and 1941 and some of the hypotheses for that name would be the shape of the arch of its base or the fact that a rainbow forms when the sun hits the water vapor, more precisely when it is observed from the Horseshoe waterfall . As the time was running out, I did not get to cross the bridge, but it has a pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle ticket, it has a toll and it is necessary to present the passport with the American visa to go to the United States side. But even seen from the boat, it is very beautiful!!!

Rainbow Bridge in the background

Now that we have gone down the funicular and embarked on the Hornblower Niagara Cruises, it’s time to get close to Niagara Falls!!! You get a cape, but I already tell you that it won’t solve much, when you get closer to the biggest waterfall, the Horseshoe, there will be no way, the waters of the falls will get you a lot wet, but I guarantee it is a sensation Wonderful!!! A unique experience that is very worthwhile. Just take a look at this video on our youtube channel to get a feel for the watering machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtB28gV4Sis

The Sisters with Luna Falls

And it was in the largest waterfall at Horseshoe¸ over 50m high, that the story of the descent into the barrel happened. This “madness” was the idea of retired teacher Annie Edson Taylor who on her 63rd birthday (October 24, 1901) jumped into a waterproof barrel that she built herself, she left with only a few cuts on her head. Before she had done a test with her cat, which luckily also survived. After it, many people tried this feat, but only a few survived, so this practice was banned and a very high fine was imposed for anyone who disobeyed. This adventure even inspired Woodpecker (the one in the cartoon) to want to jump in the barrel too, if you want to know how it was jumping just check out the episode on youtube: https://youtu.be/MWodOWl-IyI . Good thing my sister Ane doesn’t have ideas as radical as the namesake, allowing us to be contemplating Horsehoe only from the boat…

With Ane and Horseshoe!!!

After bathing in Niagara Falls, nothing better than taking the chance to dry yourself walking through the Garden of the Falls, which provides a beautiful view of the falls, as well as incredible scenery for your photos.

Garden of Niagara Falls

If you are thinking that now that you have seen the falls, the tour is ending, I have a little surprise for you: no it is not!!! Niagara Falls is also a hub of entertainment and is known as Canadian Las Vegas, the Clifton Hill is the main avenue of excitement, looking like an amusement park.

Canadian Las Vegas: Clifton Hill

Fun Clifton Hill has activities for every taste, from the Ferris wheel, games, celebrity museum to themed bars and restaurants.

The bustling Clifton Hill
Ferris Wheel
And lots of fun

But to be Canadian Las Vegas, you need a casino, right? Niagara Falls has it !!! Right there in the center you will find casinos and be able to try your luck! Have you thought about traveling and still coming home with this award? Then tell me if your bets worked.

The Niagara Falls Casinos

It is not only on Cliffton Hill that has entertainment and themed restaurants, in the adjacent streets there, you will find several options !!!

Lots of entertainment on the streets of Niagara Falls

Speaking of a themed restaurant, we opted for Margarita Ville, which in addition to having beautiful decor was closer to the Skylon Tower.

Dinner at Margarita Ville

If you’ve ever been enchanted by all the angles of the Niagara Falls shown up here, you’re sure to fall in love with this one: the view of Niagara Falls from the Skylon Tower.

Skylon Tower (www.skylon.com)  is the Niagara Falls Observation Tower, similar to Toronto’s CN Tower. The entire visit to Skylon Tower is exciting, starting with the climb, which takes just 52 seconds by elevator to reach more than 775 feet in height on the Ride-on-the-Top which is the Observation Deck that allows visibility up to 129 km on clear days and an enchanting night view of the entire illuminated city.

The Tower opened in 1965. In addition to an incredible view, the Skylon Tower also has two restaurants, the Summit Suite Buffet and the Revolving Dining Room (which is the Tower’s revolving restaurant and takes about an hour to make the 360° turn). As I went with the time, I could not enjoy the revolving restaurant, but if you are going to stay longer it is worth the experience and to guarantee your place it is better to book through the website: www.skylonreservations.com. Anyway, Skylon Tower offers us this look…

The incredible view of Niagara Falls from the Skylon Tower

And to end this visit to Skylon Tower, I leave you with this wonderful angle of Niagara Falls with its night lighting, which alternates with the passage of time. A real charm!!!

Night lighting of Niagara Falls

It is already dark and it is time to go back to Toronto, but the farewell to Niagara Falls would have to be in style, so nothing short of a fireworks show at the Falls to close the night with a golden key. This presentation takes place at 10 pm and lasts about five minutes, despite having a short duration, the spectacle of the lights of the fires with the waterfalls illuminated in the background is very beautiful. Worth the wait!!!

The Beautiful Niagara Falls Fireworks Show

With this beautiful view of Niagara Falls, I will close this post. I hope that you enjoyed!!! I sincerely thank you for your company and I wait for you in the next post, where I will show you the main and the most exotic Museums in Toronto (https://cadaviagemumabagagem.com/um-mes-pelos-museus-de-toronto/). I wait you there!!!
