Me acompanha nesse tour gourmet?

No famoso Tim Hortons

Experimentando o Poutine Veggie Deluxe no Smoke’s Poutinerie
E a Ane provando o BBQ Bacon Mac

As irmãs no Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill

No Harvey’s

As irmãs no Swiss Chalet

No Paddington’s do St Lawrence Market

As irmãs no The Jester on Yonge

O Jantar com Show do Medieval Times

Ah!

No 36oº Restaurant

O Delicioso jantar do 360º Restaurant…

Provando o Mac & Cheese do Subway

Curtindo a Balada Momentos

No Radio Adelaide Hall

No The Raq Bar & Lounge

Bilhetes Diário e Ida e Volta do Presto

No UP Express

Eating and Drinking in Toronto

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to discover a new culture and customs in the city is through local cuisine. And it was with this in mind that I created this post to share with you my experience Eating and Drinking in Toronto, Canada, from breakfast to the night at the club, in addition to giving you several tips for you to better enjoy your stay there.

Get ready because I think this post will let you a little bit hungry…. Will you accompany me on this gourmet tour?

Let’s start with Tim Hortons, who is very famous in Canada and is a mix of coffee shop and fast food. If you stop to watch you will see many Canadians with Tim Hortons’ coffee cup walking down the street, this is a very characteristic custom there and ended up becoming a trademark. But you can also get to taste the chain’s delights inside the restaurant.

In the famous Tim Hortons

The first unit of the Tim Hortons chain was opened in 1964 by hockey player Tim Horton, and then expanded to other parts of Canada and the United States, and in 2014 became part of the Burguer King group. Among the various options on the Tim Hortons menu,  French Vanilla is worth trying and among the fans of the brand, we find Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes. Speak the truth, you wanted to, didn’t you? To find out more details and find the nearest unit just check the website: www.timhortons.com

When you talk to a friend who you are going to Canada and he has already gone, he will probably tell you that you need to try the poutine, which is a typical Canadian dish based on potatoes, cheese and sauce. I had the opportunity to taste this delicacy in several places and I will introduce you to all of them now, starting with Smoke’s Poutinerie which is a chain of restaurants specializing in poutine, there are more than 30 types of gourmet poutine, including vegetarian, like the one I chose, which is Veggie Deluxe (in addition to potatoes and cheese, it comes with caramelized onions, peas and mushrooms). My sister Ane opted for BBQ Bacon Mac, which adds double bacon and barbecue sauce to traditional ingredients.

Tasting Poutine Veggie Deluxe at Smoke’s Poutinerie
And My Sister Ane tasting the Bacon Mac BBQ

The Smoke’s Poutinerie franchise was created in 2008 by the idea of Ryan Smolkin (better known as Smoke) and according to legend, he made a special poutine to win over his beloved and it worked, so he decided to give all of humanity this flavor. What really happened and the idea is to open more and more restaurants and take Canadian cuisine to the world. I’m rooting for you to get here in Brazil !!! To find out more information and the nearest address, just access the website: www.smokespoutinerie.com.

Smoke’s Poutinerie

Another place that also has poutine on the menu is the fast food chain Popeyes (Louisiana Kitchen Popeyes), which despite being specialized in chicken snacks, offers this typical Canadian option. The franchise emerged in New Orleans, Louisiana (United States) in the 1970s, was expanding around the world, arriving in Toronto in 1984 and in Brazil in 2018 (but it still doesn’t offer the poutine option here). To check the full menu and the location of the stores, just check the website: www.popeyeschicken.ca.

And Ane trying the chicken snack

Continuing our marathon through restaurants with poutine, I want to introduce you to Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill. In addition to a generous poutine, we also took the opportunity to try a delicious Milk Shake with this cookie that reminds us a lot of the Brazilian rain cookie.

The sisters at Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill

As the name says, Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill, in addition to a restaurant, it is also a bar, with a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere that is very inviting for a happy hour. The unit we went to was Dundas Square, but there are several others, to find the closest one to your location and also the variety of the menu, just check the website: http://jackastors.com.

Now that we’ve talked a lot about poutine and you already have a few options for places to visit, I want to tell you about another very famous dish in Canada, BeaverTails, but don’t worry that the name just refers to the shape of the candy that really looks like the beaver’s tail. This sweet is a type of Canadian pastry covered with various flavors, I chose the vanilla with Maple syrup and Ane the Oreo. We prove in a Toronto Island Kiosk, but there are many other units across Canada.

And Ane tasting Oreo BeaverTails

BeaverTails story began in 1978 with Pam and Grant Hooker, selling pastel at the Killaloe Fair in Ottawa, then the business expanded to other Canadian cities, creating the first franchise in 1987 with Pino di Ioia, arriving in the United States in 2015 and currently serves more than 140 locations, between the United States and Canada with a distribution project to six more countries. To find out more information just access the website: www.beavertails.com.

And if you miss a pizza during your trip, don’t worry, in Toronto and other parts of Canada you will find the fast food chain Pizza Pizza, which since 1967 has been conquering the palates. In addition to pizzas, including vegetarian ones, there are other snack options on the menu. To find out more details just take a look at the website: www.pizzapizza.ca . And it was at Pizza Pizza that we first tried Canada Dry, which is the typical Canadian ginger-based soda. It’s very good and if you put pieces of ginger it gets even better.

The Famous Canada Dry

Another well-known fast food in Toronto is Harvey’s chain, which is famous for its hamburgers with toppings to be chosen on the spot by customers and also for the menu items to be made with all products of Canadian origin, as a way to enhance local production! The first restaurant was opened in 1959 and has been growing ever since, now part of Recipe Unlimited (the same owner of the Swiss Chalet, which I will talk about in a moment) reaching more than 270 establishments across the country. The menu has a lot of options, including vegetarian, like this burger I chose. More information is on the website: https://www.harveys.ca.

At Harvey’s

However, if you are looking for a more cozy place, you will like the Swiss Chalet chain (it reminds a lot of the Outback chain), despite being more focused on dishes with chicken than with beef (as in Outback), but it has options for vegetarians, like this potato gratin I chose and my sister got the traditional chicken. We approved a lot  our choices!!!

The sisters at Swiss Chalet

Swiss Chalet’s first restaurant opened in 1954 in Toronto, following an architecture based on the style of the Swiss chalet (from which the name “Swiss Chalet”) that uses a lot of wood in the decoration . Then it expanded, reaching more than 200 units in the country. He is currently also part of Recipe Unlimited, as is Harvey’s. To find out more details just check the website: https://www.swisschalet.com . Do you accept this delicious dessert?

Speaking of a cozy place, it is worth visiting the Yorkville Crepes that, in addition to the cuisine, has a typical French decor. Take advantage of the weather to have a cup of coffee and enjoy the crepes (or the other options on the menu). Yorkville Crepes is located at 18, Yorkville Avenue, just around the corner from Yonge Street. To find out more details just check the website: www.yorkvillecrepes.com.

When I travel, I always like to get to know the public markets, it’s a way to get closer to the local culture and gastronomy and in Toronto it was no different, so much so that the tip now is about the St Lawrence Market, which is the Toronto Public Market, where in addition to the variety of fresh foods, it is also possible to find several snack bars and restaurants and it was the chosen place to taste Peameal Bacon,  which is one of the typical foods of the city. There are several places on the market to try this Bacon Sandwich, we opted for Paddington’s restaurant, which had a vegetarian sandwich for me and my sister Ane was in charge of tasting the Bacon Peameal !!! Did she like this mission? I think so … To find out more details and menu options from Paddington’s,  just take a look at the website: www.paddingtonspump.com .

At Paddington’s at St Lawrence Market

Remembering that St. Lawrence Market is at 92 Front Street East (next to the King Station on the Yellow Metro Line) and more information is on the website: www.stlawrencemarket.com.

Other place that you will find many options of restaurants, bars and cafes is in the Distillery District that is the union of gastronomy with entertainment, variety of stores and art!! So, feel free to choose what you like best! My love for chocolate spoke louder and I decided to visit the Coffee Shop Cacao 70 (https://cacao70.com/en/our-locations/distillery-district ), that has such a wonderful menu that it was difficult to choose, but we opted for chocolate creamy and that strawberry waffle that was divine!!!

The sisters at Cacao 70
Do you accept this waffle?

But the Distillery District has a lot more to offer, it is worth taking the time to visit and come back several times if you have the opportunity. More details of what awaits you there are on the website: https://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/ . And to find out how my tour was there, just take a look at the post: https://cadaviagemumabagagem.com/passeios-diferentes-em-toronto/

Late afternoon arriving and my tip is to enjoy a happy hour in a Pub, Toronto has several. What we visited was The Jester on Yonge, which is on Yonge Street and has a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, but you can choose from the many pubs around the city. The important thing is to have fun!!!!

The Sisters in The Jester on Yonge

Happy hour reminds a beer, doesn’t it? Then you can take the opportunity to take a Tour with Tasting at the Steam Whistle Brewery, which is one of the most famous craft beers in Canada. I told you in detail how the tour was in the post about Different Tours in Toronto, if you haven’t seen it or want to remember it, take a look there: https://cadaviagemumaumaagem.com/passeios-diferentes-em-toronto/

This view is really stunning!!! The Thompson Toronto Hotel is located at 550 Wellington Street West, about 1.5 km from the CN Tower, and the Rooftop Bar is frequented by both hotel guests and the general public. In addition to the drinks that are great (there is no alcohol option), the atmosphere is very cozy!!! A toast to Toronto with this look!!!

A toast to Toronto!!!

And if you are looking for a different place for dinner and you like the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, you will love to visit Medieval Times, a themed concert hall from the medieval period that gives us a real dive into this universe from decoration, through the show, to arrive at dinner.

Welcome to Medieval Times

Medieval Times Dinner-Show takes place as follows: the audience sits in the stands that already have the tables and watches a show of medieval battles, cheering for their knight while tasting a typical menu from the Middle Ages (like soup of tomatoes, roasted corn, potatoes and for those who are not vegetarian – like my sister – half roasted chicken is served). And detail to eat with your hands because at that time there was no cutlery (but don’t worry, they provide wet wipes for hand hygiene).

Medieval Times Dinner-Show

Ah! Remember that the ticket for the Medieval Times (CAD $ 67.95 – adults and CAD $ 45.95 – children) already includes a show and dinner (starter, main course, dessert, drinks and coffee) and if you buy with in advance on the website you can still get discounts. For more details, take a look: https://www.medievaltimes.com/plan-your-trip/toronto-on/index.html . And for you to get an idea of what a show is like, see this video that I posted on our youtube channel: https://youtu.be/Msmv8q-mKEI and tell me if this dancing horse is not a charm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4eTrSJO4Bo .

Another place that is also an excellent option for dinner is the 360 ° Restaurant, the CN Tower’s Rotating Restaurant. But as it is very crowded it is better to book in advance, which can be done on the website: https://www.cntower.ca/en-ca/360-restaurant/reservations-and-menus.html  and already guarantees that you can enjoy the incredible 360º view of the CN Tower and enjoy delicious gourmet food, as well as direct (skip the line) access to the Tower.

At 360 ° Restaurant

360º Restaurant menu has a fixed price (ranging from CAD $ 65 to $ 79, including starter and main course and dessert is also included in the second price – drinks are paid separately) and has a vegetarian option!!! In addition to the delicious food, you will enjoy the wonderful 360º view of the city, which lasts approximately one hour for a complete tour. If it becomes difficult for dinner, you can book for lunch, but the important thing is to include it in your itinerary, because it is very worth it !!! More information is available on the website: https://www.cntower.ca/en-ca/360-restaurant/overview.html.

With this incredible view…

Remembering that the service fee or tip is not included in the bill, so it is good to add the amount (from 10% to 20% of the bill value), otherwise they will be very upset and will ask you what went wrong for you not wanting to pay tip… And as I said earlier, the reservation for the restaurant already guarantees the entrance to the CN Tower, so take the opportunity to contemplate the view from the other levels of observation of the tower after your meal. I showed this view in detail in the post “Top 10 in Toronto” if you haven’t seen it or want to review it, just access: https://cadaviagemumabagagem.com/top-10-de-toronto/

Other typical Canadian foods that are worth trying are Mac & Cheese (Macaroni and Cheese), that appeared in Canada, but became famous in the United States at the time of the Great Depression for being a practical and inexpensive dish. In Canada you will find it in several places, including the Subway network (www.subway.com/en-CA), which is where I tried it.

Tasting Mac & Cheese of Subway

It is also worth tasting the Oka cheese (www.fromageoka.ca/en) which was created by the monk Alphonse Juin in 1893 in Oka, Quebec (hence the origin of the cheese’s name) and pleased the palates with its authentic flavor. and that you can harmonize with Icewine, which is the traditional Canadian wine, made with grapes that are harvested frozen. Then tell me what you think of this combination.

The Famous IceWine

Speaking of harmonization, what combines very well is art with gastronomy and you can find it at the AGO Bistro, which is a Bistro, which is located inside the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), but also has access through 317, Dundas Street West. It is a charming and elegant restaurant, it has already been awarded and its project, together with that of AGO, was developed by architect Frank Gehry. It is worth taking a stroll there, after the visit to the AGO, but if you don’t have time to go to the Gallery, you can go straight to the AGO Bistrô. To know the complete menu and more information, just take a look at the website: www.ago.ca/dine/ago-bistro.

Now the time has come to introduce you to the Toronto nightclubs, let’s start with the Fiction Club Toronto, which is a nightclub that has a different schedule every day and one of the most lively days is on Wednesday, when the Party “Momentos” happens, which is the Latin night, so get ready to dance a lot (if you get a space because it is very crowded…lol). The nightclub Fiction Club is at 180 Pearl Street and more details are on the website: www.fictionclub.ca.

Another nightclub in Toronto is Radio Adelaide Hall or Adelaide Hall, which is a nightclub and event space that accommodates up to 475 people. The entertainment is on account of DJs and artists from the city. It is a more relaxed and alternative atmosphere. The address is 250, Adelaide St W and more information and the complete program is on the website: www.adelaidehallto.com

Fun is also guaranteed at The Raq Bar & Lounge, which combines bar games (like billiards and other games) with great cocktails and lively music. It is a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The Raq is located at 739 Queen Street West and more information is on the instagram page: @the_raq.  With all these options, just look and enjoy the night of Toronto!!!

Now that you know where to eat and drink, it is worth noting another tip, which is very important for you to make the most of your trip to Toronto. Let’s talk about the issue of locomotion, which is very easy using the subway. The company responsible for public transport in Toronto is the TTC (acronym for Toronto Transit Commission), which operates both the subway, bus and street car lines (which are electric buses) and accessing the website: www.ttc.ca  you can assemble your itinerary and also find out more information. I’ll show you the photo of the subway map for you to have an idea. The main subway lines are Yellow (Line 1 – Yonge-University) and the Green line (Line 2 – Bloor- Danforth), but there is also Blue (Line 3 – Scarboroug Line) and Purple (Line 4 – Sheppard) . And in some stations it is possible to transfer to another line. I found the subway clean and well maintained, and it has very beautiful stations like the Museum that has these sculptures scattered on the platform!

The ticket to use the subway can be purchased both at the ticket office and at machines on the subway and to facilitate you can buy the Presto Card which is an electronic card that can also be purchased on these machines for CAD$ 6 and allows you to recharge with the value of the single tickets, daily, weekly or monthly. More information is on the website: www.prestocard.ca/en.

Daily and Return Presto Tickets

In addition to the traditional lines, the Presto Card can still be used on the UP Express (Union Pearson Express) which is the line that connects Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport (the ticket price is a little more expensive, but worth it). This line has specific schedules, the wagons are very comfortable and adapted with space for luggage and the journey lasts about 25 minutes. To find out more information, just check the website: www.torontopearson.com/en/transportation-and-parking/up-express.

In UP Express

It is also very quiet to ride a bus in Toronto and what I found very interesting is that the vehicles have an electronic sign indicating the stop, so you don’t have to ask the driver where to get off. Street cars are like that too. Ah! The Presto Card can also be used here.
